The Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly has successfully carried out its first clean-up exercise for the year 2026 in observance of National Sanitation Day. The exercise, held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, brought together key stakeholders and residents of the municipality in a collective effort to promote environmental cleanliness and public health.
The clean-up exercise was led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Joseph Awal Antwi, who actively participated alongside the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mahama Musah Sensau. Their involvement highlighted the Assembly’s commitment to environmental sanitation and demonstrated leadership by example in the promotion of hygiene and a clean environment.
Also in attendance were the Municipal Engineer, Heads of Departments, and staff of the Assembly, who worked together to supervise and take part in the exercise. The activity received strong support from security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the Ghana National Fire Service, who ensured safety and order throughout the exercise. Assembly Members, transport unions, Okada riders, store owners, market women, and traders actively participated by temporarily suspending their business activities to clean markets, lorry stations, streets, drains, and other public spaces. Their involvement reflected a growing sense of collective responsibility and ownership of environmental sanitation within the municipality.
Members of the general public, including youth groups and volunteers, also turned out in their numbers. Armed with brooms, shovels, wheelbarrows, and hoes, participants desilted drains, cleared refuse, and tidied public areas across the Nkwanta Township.
Addressing participants after the exercise, Hon. Joseph Awal Antwi commended all stakeholders for their commitment and dedication. He further appealed to residents to turn out in greater numbers for subsequent clean-up exercises, surpassing the participation recorded during the current exercise. He also emphasized that sanitation should be a continuous practice rather than a one-day activity and urged residents to sustain the cleanliness achieved while cooperating with environmental health officers to ensure proper waste management.
The exercise was widely described as successful, strengthening collaboration among stakeholders and reinforcing the importance of maintaining a clean environment for good health, dignity, and sustainable development in the Nkwanta South Municipality.
