The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), in collaboration with the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) and the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS), organized a two-day capacity-building workshop for Assembly Members in the Nkwanta South Municipality from Thursday, July 23 to Friday, July 24, 2026.
The workshop forms part of a nationwide training program for Assembly Members across all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), under the theme: "Nationwide Next Generation Leadership Training for Members of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs)."
On Day One, participants were taken through Decentralisation and Local Governance Laws, Corporate Governance and Oversight Responsibilities, the Representative Functions of Assembly Members, and Deliberative Functions and Meeting Procedures. Day Two focused on the Making and Enforcement of By-Laws, Executive Mandates and Discretionary Powers of MMDAs, and Leadership and Community Mobilisation.
As part of the final session, dubbed the "Assembly Member Change-Making Project," participants were tasked with identifying three developmental needs in their respective electoral areas and proposing practical solutions to address them.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Joseph Antwi, visited the Assembly Members at the training venue and expressed hope that the training would significantly improve the quality of deliberation at Assembly meetings, empowering members to better deliver on their mandate.
The two-day program was facilitated by Mr. Delali Kofi Mordegli, Consultant at ILGS, Accra, and Mr. Prosper Kesetyor, a member of the Monitoring and Facilitation Team for the Nationwide Assembly Member Training Programme.
