Overview

Food and farming

The Agriculture Department of the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly is responsible for promoting agricultural development and improving food security within the municipality. It focuses on enhancing productivity, supporting farmers, and ensuring sustainable use of natural resources to drive local economic growth. The department provides extension services to farmers, offering technical guidance on modern farming practices, crop production, livestock management, pest and disease control, and climate-smart agriculture. It works to build the capacity of farmers through training, demonstrations, and field visits, helping them adopt improved technologies and increase yields.

In addition, the department facilitates access to agricultural inputs such as improved seeds, fertilizers, and agrochemicals, while also supporting irrigation development and mechanization to improve efficiency. It collaborates with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and private sector partners, to implement agricultural programs and interventions. The department also plays a role in promoting agribusiness and value chain development by supporting processing, storage, and marketing of agricultural produce. It encourages farmer-based organizations and cooperatives to enhance access to markets, finance, and collective bargaining opportunities.

Furthermore, the Agriculture Department monitors and controls animal diseases, ensures food safety standards, and promotes environmental conservation practices such as soil management and sustainable land use. The department is committed to transforming agriculture within the municipality into a modern, productive, and resilient sector that improves livelihoods, creates employment, and contributes to the overall development of the Nkwanta South Municipality.
