Households in Nkwanta and Breweniase are among the latest beneficiaries of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Project, the Government's flagship poultry revitalisation programme aimed at boosting household poultry production, improving livelihoods, and strengthening food security across the country.
The nationwide initiative, launched by President John Dramani Mahama, forms part of the broader Poultry Industry Revitalisation Programme under the Feed Ghana agenda. It is designed to bring poultry production directly into homes, schools, and communities, with the President indicating that the project will benefit 55,000 households nationwide. Under the programme, beneficiary households receive starter birds along with feed support and technical guidance to help them begin sustainable poultry production.
In the Nkwanta Municipality, communities including Nkwanta and Breweniase have received their share of the distribution. Speaking on the initiative, the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Geoffrey Kini, explained that the project will support beneficiaries to produce eggs and fresh poultry for the local market, giving households a reliable source of income and nutrition.
He further noted that beyond its benefits at the household level, the initiative is expected to contribute to reducing Ghana's heavy reliance on imported chicken. The country currently imports the vast majority of its poultry needs, at a cost of several hundred million dollars annually, and government has identified local poultry production as a key lever for cutting down this import bill while creating jobs along the poultry value chain — from feed production to processing and distribution.
To ensure beneficiaries get the most out of the initiative, the Municipal Department of Agriculture, led by the Head of Department, Mr. Seth Asafo, and his team engaged the beneficiary households ahead of the distribution. The engagement included practical education on proper poultry-rearing techniques, covering areas such as brooding, feeding, disease prevention, and general bird management, to help beneficiaries adopt safe and effective practices that ensure healthy birds and improved production.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) was in attendance to witness the exercise and encourage beneficiaries to make the most of the support provided. The distribution exercise, which began on the first day, continued into a second day at Nkwanta to reach all registered beneficiaries.
The Nkoko Nkitinkiti Project is expected to strengthen local poultry production, create livelihood opportunities — particularly for women and youth — improve household food security, and contribute to the growth of the local agricultural economy in the Municipality and beyond.
