The Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) has commenced a four-day Operational Field Visit (OFV) to the Nkwanta South Municipality in the Oti Region as part of the practical training for students of Senior Staff Course 47 (SSC 47). The exercise seeks to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and field operations by exposing participants to real-life internal security operations and civil-military coordination. Running through 11 March 2026, the programme is aimed at producing senior and mid-level officers capable of analysing complex security challenges and providing sound operational and strategic military advice.
Nkwanta South was selected for the exercise due to its recurring security challenges, including communal conflicts, chieftaincy disputes, land ownership issues, and other socio-economic grievances that have required the continuous deployment of the Ghana Army to support civil authorities in maintaining peace and security. The operational environment provides participants with an opportunity to study these challenges firsthand and gain practical insights into conflict prevention and management.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Colonel Raymond Quartey, Chief Instructor of the Alpha Division, Army Faculty at GAFCSC and leader of the delegation, said the exercise is being conducted under the theme, "Strengthening Military Aid to Civil Authority/Internal Security Operations in the Oti Region: Enhancing Readiness, Coordination, and Responsiveness for National Development." He explained that participants would assess the underlying causes of conflicts in the municipality, evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing military operations, examine inter-agency command and control arrangements, and analyse civil-military relations. The findings, he noted, would enable the students to develop practical recommendations to improve operational effectiveness and support national development.
Welcoming the delegation, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, Joseph Antwi Awal, expressed appreciation to the GAFCSC for selecting the municipality for the exercise. He said the visit would strengthen security intelligence and contribute to sustainable peace, creating a conducive environment for socio-economic development and business growth. He assured the delegation of the Assembly's full cooperation and support throughout the four-day visit, describing the collaboration as beneficial to both the College's academic objectives and the long-term stability of the municipality.
