Clean communities
The Environmental Health and Sanitation Department of the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly is responsible for promoting public health through effective environmental management and sanitation services across the municipality. Its primary focus is to prevent disease, improve hygiene standards, and ensure a clean and safe living environment for all residents. The department oversees waste management activities, including the collection, transportation, and disposal of solid and liquid waste. It works to ensure proper sanitation practices in homes, markets, schools, and public spaces, while also promoting recycling and environmentally sustainable waste disposal methods. Routine inspections are carried out to enforce sanitation bye-laws and address issues such as indiscriminate dumping, poor drainage, and unsanitary conditions. In addition, the department conducts public health education and awareness campaigns to promote good hygiene practices, including proper handwashing, food safety, and environmental cleanliness. It collaborates with communities, institutions, and other stakeholders to implement sanitation programs and encourage behavioral change.
The department is also responsible for monitoring and controlling environmental health risks, including water contamination, pest and vector control, and sanitation-related diseases. It supports efforts to prevent outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and malaria through inspections, disinfection exercises, and community outreach.
It plays a key role in regulating food hygiene by inspecting food vendors, markets, and food processing facilities to ensure compliance with health standards. It also advises on sanitation infrastructure such as public toilets, drainage systems, and waste disposal facilities. The Environmental Health and Sanitation Department is committed to safeguarding public health by ensuring a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment for the people of the Nkwanta South Municipality.
